His piano teachers include Julian Martin from the Juilliard School, Arkady Aronov from the Manhattan School of Music, Melvin Chen from Yale, Tomer Lev from the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music in Israel at the Tel Hai International Piano Master Classes, Evelyn Crochet, Jean-David Coen, James Giles, Phil Hosford, and childhood teacher Myrna Lyons. He is based on Cape Cod, in Harwich, Massachusetts, where he is Music Director, choir conductor, and organist at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Barnstable, Massachusetts, and Music Director of the Cobb's Hill Concert Series.

James has a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Yale University and a Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School, and is licensed to practice law in New York and Massachusetts. After pursuing a dual career in music and law, including working at the firms of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, LLP, and the Cape Cod land use firm Senie & Associates, P.C., James was a participant or finalist in several amateur competitions, including the final 2022 edition of the Cliburn Amateur Competition in Texas, the 2016 Chicago Amateur Competition, where he was a finalist, and the 2016 WQXR Classical Moonlighters Competition in New York, where he was also a finalist. Although still licensed in law, he now works exclusively in music.

James has performed concertos as a soloist with the Cape Symphony, Mansfield Philharmonic, and more. He regularly performs in the Cape Cod region, including concerts at the Cape Cod Cultural Center and Cobb's Hill Concert Series, and has performed at venues including Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, Artis Naples' Daniels Pavilion, and more. James is looking forward to performing Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with the WPI Symphony in November, 2026. James has a wide repertoire, including Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Grieg, Rachmaninoff, Debussy, Ravel, Joplin, Albeniz, and more. He also collaborates with other musicians, including wife and pianist Ana Glig, and composes and performs his own works.
